The Cub Scout Grand Howl

This is typically done to close a Pack Meeting.

When called to do so, the Cub Scouts form a circle with each Cub Scout's right arm extended with his hand on the shoulder of his neighbor to the right.  When a circle has been formed, each Cub Scout squats down and makes the two fingered Cub Scout sign with both hands, and touches the fingers of both hands between his feet to the ground.  Then lead the boys in a long howl.  "AHHH...KAYYY...LA!  WE'LL DO OUR BEST!"  As they yell the last word "best" loud and clear, all the Cub Scouts jump to their feet, and raise their hands high above their heads, while still giving the Cub Scout sign.

The Cub Scout Sign ("Signs Up!")

Make the sign with your right hand with the first two fingers extended,

Hold your right arm straight up (not just next to your ear).

What Does It Mean?  The two fingers stand for the two parts of the Cub Scout Promise - "TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE" and "TO OBEY." They look like a wolf's ears alert and ready to listen to Akela. Give the Cub Scout sign when you say the "Cub Scout Promise" and the "Law of the Pack."

The Cub Scout Handshake

To shake hands with another Cub Scout or Cub Scout leader in uniform:

1. Make the Cub Scout sign with your right hand,
   
2. Extend your hand out to the other person and shake hands so your two extended fingers are against the other person's palm.

The Cub Scout Salute

Use the Cub Scout Salute when you are in your Cub Scout uniform and you say the Pledge of Allegiance, or when you meet another Cub Scout or Scout Leader in uniform.

To make the Cub Scout Salute:

1. Make the Cub Scout sign with your right hand,
   
2. Keep the two fingers next to each other and straight,
   
3. Touch the tips of the fingers to the visor of your cap.  If you are not wearing a cap, then tough your fingers to your right eyebrow.

The salute is a way to show respect to your leaders and your country. When you salute a leader, you show him or her that you look up to them, when you salute the flag you show that you are proud of your country.  Hold your salute until the Scout Leadersalutes and releases his salute.  After the Scout Leader has released his salute, you can release your's too.

The Cub Scouts Flag Ceremony

At the beginning of most gatherings, Cub Scouts will perform the Official Cub Scouts Flag Ceremony.  To do this, the Cub Scouts follow these steps:

1. The Denner and Assistant Denner comes to the center of the room. The Denner stands behind the US Flag stand; the Assistant Denner stands behind the Pack Flag stand.
   
2. The ceremony starts with the Denner asking everyone "Would you please stand for the presentation of our nation's and our Pack's flags. "
   
3. Everyone stands. Once everyone is standing, the Denner then commands "Color Guard Advance! "
   
4. The two Cub Scouts carrying the US and Pack flags then come down the aisle. The US Flag is in front and the Pack flag is in back. The flag carriers go to where the Denner and Assistant Denner is standing (that's done because sometimes the flag carriers can't see the flag stand and sometimes they trip over it....) and then faces the audience.
   
5. The Denner then states "Would you please join me in the Pledge of Allegiance." He then faces the flag, and commands "SCOUT SALUTE". Once he salutes the flag, he pauses and then leads the Pledge of Allegiance .
   
6. Once the Pledge is completed, he lowers his hand and commands "TWO " (this tells the Scouts that they can lower their hands now. Don't worry, even the new Cub Scouts will see that the Denner's not saluting any more and will eventually lower their hands too.)
   
7. Then, the Assistant Denner states "Please take your seats. Cub Scouts and Scouters please remain standing and join me in the Cub Scout Promise. "
   
8. The Assistant Denner then faces the flag and commands "Scout Salute!" Once again, once everyone's ready, then he leads the Pack in the Cub Scout Promise. Again, when he is finished, then he lowers his hand and commands "TWO " which gives the instruction for everyone to lower than hands.
   
9. The Denner then states "Post the Colors " and both flag holders place the flag into their appropriate holders. The US flag goes in first, and then the Pack's flag. Once that is done, the ceremony is finished and all four Cub Scouts can join the rest of the Den at their seats.

Some prompting may be needed by you or another adult as some Cub Scouts experience stage fright after practicing for days and weeks for the big night. Comfort them before and afterwards that everything that they do is in practice for those times as an adult they will have to lead people. And coach them through the rough spots when it may seem that they've forgotten what to do next.
